Savour This Coffee Art
Gujarat-based sisters dabble in the unique art form

All those coffee lovers can feel proud that now coffee goes arty too. As refreshing as freshly brewed coffee with its heavenly aroma, the coffee pigment amazingly lends itself to be a perfect but unique art medium.

Bringing to Hyderabad their first ever coffee Art Show, Bhavnagar, Gujarat, based sisters Amita and Mira Chudasama insist there is no other medium of art like coffee. “When we read about Chinese using tea powder to paint, we thought why not coffee! Though we initially dabbled in both, we realized coffee pigment gives more depth, different tones and shades. ‘’
Chudasama sisters kept working on the medium for the last five years. “The medium has the rare quality of giving luster, intensity to the work besides lifting the texture of ordinary canvas,’’ says Mira

About 20 paintings are on display comprising wildlife, ruins, heritage structures, landscapes tribal and portraits. Some paintings were done with clay base to give an embossed look and more depth to the chosen theme. “Coffee gives unique effects better than any other medium,” Mira avers.

Armed with diploma in Fine Arts, they worked with various mediums including water colors, oil painting .acrylic, glass and mosaic before shifting to coffee .’’It is a bit cumbersome as the canvas has to be handled carefully and one cannot put it on easel until the coffee painting dries up But end result makes it worth the effort ,’’she says .

Over a hot cuppa
If you are a coffee lover, here`s a chance to savour the aroma of coffee on canvas

Sisters Amita and Mira Chudasama from Saurashtra of Gujarat have a coffee story to tell. Their first exhibition of coffee paintings titled ‘Coffee On the Wall` is on at Chitramayee Arts Gallery, Madhapur.

Five years ago, when the sisters tried to copy the carvings of Siddi Syed Mosque in Ahmedabad, they felt the need to retain an old world charm in the painting. We tried acrylic, oil and water colours but were not successful . Later we came to know of the tea paintings of China. It also didn`t work. However , the idea inspired us to take up coffee painting, explains Mira Chudasama, the youngest of the sisters.

A coffee brown colour and its varying shades render an old world charm to the creations. A sharp portrayal of Banjara woman by Mira is a visual treat.

The uniqueness, shine and a mild aroma of coffee are the other interesting features of the medium. And to get fine textures, one can use clay says Mira.

Making a coffee painting demands utmost care and planning. A canvas is suitable as the hand-made paper gets folded once coffee is spplied. The technique is to use coffee powder mixed with water and depending on the density of the solution, the shades also change. White space in the canvas adds to the contrast.

Before painting, the artist should decide on colours, tone and outlines. In fact, the nature of the medium demands greater effort. One has to be careful about the flow of water on the canvas, says Mira. It takes two to six days for the paintings to dry up and depends on the thickness of the solution.

The sisters have the support of their brother, Jayesh, who works in city-based software company. To promote the ‘coffee works`, jayesh launched a website, www.artandpainting.net.

Have a look at these unique coffee works before June 18.

With respect to concerns while painting with coffee raises few points.

First, Opposite to the conventional painting style, due to tendency of water flowing downward, in undesired areas coffee-painting requests not to place a canvas in standing position to avoid the spreading of shades,.

Secondly, a painting made with coffee will hold an extra glaze once it gets dried, which is natural. So do not raise an eyebrow about it.

Last but not least. You need patience and creative while making your art with ‘Coffee’ painting.. You need to be cautious while using water to thin and proposing shades on paper or canvas.
